Metadata Standardization: Pipe Dream or Possibility?

With so many different metadata delivery formats and no standards of terminology, libraries spend thousands (or tens of thousands) of hours converting, refining or fixing metadata. In the 80s, electronic music manufacturers devised and created MIDI so their instruments could work together. Is there an analog for our industry? Would it be beneficial to us and our clients to standardize terminology? Or do similar industry initiatives heretofore portend that to be an improbable feat? Join us for a candid and lively debate over the pros and cons of developing these standards.  Our panel of experts will also break down the difference between ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ metadata, discuss the important but oft-overlooked ‘rights layer’ (for which there are standards), and guide you through best practices for successfully managing your production music catalog until (if ever) such standards exist.
